...for god's sake please remember:

1. Every Fixed gear bike HAS at least ONE brake!

They just don't have (rear) V-brakes, Cantilever brakes, Rim brakes, rod brakes, Stirrup brakes, Side-pull calliper brakes, U-brakes, Roller cam brakes, Delta brakes, Hydraulic rim brakes, Disc brakes, Drum brakes or Coaster brakes,
but they have fixed gear brake which IS a brake, even due to general laws in most countries.

So please stop saying that fixed gear bikes are brakeless, brakeless are BMXes, some dirt bikes and some street bikes.

  • Vsi ki ne znate angleško in govorite da so fixed gear kolesa "brez bremz" uporabite google translator za zgornji text.

Hvala.

That's an interesting view but which part of the bike is the brake again?

"A brake is a device for applying a force against the friction of the road, slowing or stopping the motion of a machine or vehicle, or alternatively a device to restrain it from starting to move again."

So you apply a force with your legs, to your pedals to your chain to your fixed hub and than to your spokes to your rim to your tire and than finaly to road. Its a fucking brake.

Its almost the same as a Coaster brake, why it wouldn't count as a brake?

I'd bet I can stop faster on fixed gear than someone with coaster brake.

I know I'm acting geeky with copypasting from wikipedia and ranting so I apologise for that.

Why is this article good for? To convince the blue ones, that we have brakes?

Discussion by it self is ridiculous. One always have the shoes to press against front or/and rear tyre if everything else fails. It can slow you down, stop you or even throw you over handlebar. It comes stock with EVERY bike without mud guards.

Roller blades, are almost as fast, and don't have a mechanical brake, skate boards don't have brakes... And they can somehow legally slow down or stop.

How the bike works and what the law says are rarely the same thing. Lots of old coaster brakes take forever to stop with. I just had a stick to stop with remember in portland a judge told them it would be ok if they or sth. Ofc they had a skid competition with a a stick-brake. (same method as with a sole on rear tyre).

As far as rollerblades and skateboards go, usually this is because of how they are treated in the law. They are as far as I know always considered as pedestrian, that is laws concerning vehicles does not apply. And bicycles are usually considered as vehicles as proven by the DUI tickets handed out earlier this summer.

Anyway, I doubt Slo cops will start checking for brakes any time soon..

ok. so thanks to my fucked keyboard and memory the portland story came out wrong.I heard about this one case in portland where the judge said that it would be ok if they only had sth, like a stick or sth to brake with..

What is, suddenly, the fuss about brakes all about?

trashcore said...

In Germany, Sweden and other places its illegal to ride a bike without a brake. I guess somehow someone raised concerns about that in slovenia. I think the less its discussed the better it is, since cops here are not hunting track bikes and lets not give them stupid ideas..

rogmaraton said...

In Germany it counts as a legal brake: http://www.cycles-for-heroes.com/blog?page=1

trashcore said...

I read about that, but that is pretty unique. If you check Der Spiegel: http://www.spiegel.de/international/germany/0,1518,641075,00.html it's only in Bonn, so in the rest of Germany it's still not legal. Still, it's a small victory for the Germans.

What Slovene law says about bicycles, I have no idea..
